General properties of capacitor
- capacitor is an electrical device which can stored elctric charge as wellas electric potential energy.
- A capacitor is made of two conductor separated by very small distance(some time may only one plate)
- conductor of capacitor is known as plate of capacitor.
- The two plates of capacitor should be maintain at different potential
- the plate with higher potential is known as positive plate and the plate with lower potential is negative plate.
Properties of tipical capacitor
- The two plates of capacitor are equally and oppositly charge.
- The plate of capacitor which is connected with positive terminal of battery is known as positive plate and the plate with negative terminal is known as negative plate.
- The net charge of capacitor is zero but the charge on positive plate is known as charge of the capacitor.
- The potential difference between positive plate and negative plate is known as potential of capacitor.
we say that
Q ∝ V (charge directly proportional to potential)
so Q = CV
C⇾(+)constant
C⇾capacitance or capacity
Capacitance:-capacitance of any capacitor determines the amount of charge stored by the capacitor for the given potential .
Mathematically capacitance of capacitor is amount of charge stored by capacitor for the potential difference of one volt.
C=Q/V
if ,V=1 volt
C=Q
Calculation of Capacitance
Capacity Capacity of capacitor does not depend of charge and potential of the capacitor it depend on following factors
- Size of plate
- distance between plates
- the medium present of Capacitors depends on geometrical parameter.
✴️So ,the Capacitance of Capacitor depends on Geometrical parameter.
