Types of charging

1.  Frictional elctricity
2. charging by induction

(1) Frictinal Electricity:-If we rub two surface than there will be production of heat.The heat produced will be absorb by two surfaces.Between the two surface having lower work function will loss(eject) an Electron and become positively charge while surface higher work function will absorb ejected electron and become Negatively charge.

 

Work Function 

It is the minimum amount of energy which has to be suplized to removed electron from any substance.

 Example of frictional energy-Lighting

 

Lighting 

In this case electric charge is develop on clould(बादल) due to friction with air molecule.If the magnitude of charge in coloud wil be greater than certain maximum value,it will discharge through dielectric-break-down of air.This whole process is known as lighting.

 

(ii)charging by induction

It is use for charging conductor.

 

steps  

1. The  positively charged rod exerts force on electron and protons of conductor.
2. Only electrons will move,so electron will be accumucated nearer to the rod.
3. After seperation of negative and positive charge,the sphere is earthed.
4. Due to earthing Electrons are comming from earth and neutralizes the positive charges in this way the sphere is negatively charged.
5. If we remove the rod then the charged on sphere will be Uniformly distributed.  

Charging by polarization 

It is use for bad conductor(dielectric).

 

Charging  by conduction used for conductor(metels) in this case an unchange body is connected with charge body due to connection charge will flow one-body to other body through metalic wire this process is known as conduction.
