Behaviour of conductor of electrostatics

In  electrostatics all points of conductor have same potential.

Explanation:-

If we asume potential of point has different value then the free electron of the conductor will start moving and will produce electric current. Due to electric current there will be produced of heat and from conservation of energy to produce heat be must have external energy supplies(battery). In electrostatics we cannot use battery so,our assumption was wrong.

  • As we know that inside the conductor electric field is zero so potential difference between two points of conductor will also be equal to zero.
  • Electric field is perpendicular to sarface of conductor.
  • If we join to isolated connector by a wire then there will be flow of charge between two conductor so, that they will be at common potential.
Surface of metal behave like equipotential surface
Equipotential
👉The surface on which all points same potential is known as equipotential surface.
👉It may be real or hypothetical.
👉Shape of equiponential surface may be symmetric or a symmetrical.
👉Electric field is always perpendicular to equipotential surface.
👉Two equipotential surface never intersect each other if do so there will two direction for active field at 1 point which is not possible.
👉If a point charge is move on equiponential surface then the work done on charge will be zero.
👉Density of equipotential surfaces directly proportional to magnitude of electric field[ provided surface are drawn for constant potential difference]
